Role Summary

We are seeking a Senior Lead Database Engineer with deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, operating primarily in hybrid environments (on prem + cloud). This role combines strong database development, administration, performance engineering, and automated deployments, with a critical emphasis on data discovery and migration from legacy systems.

The ideal candidate is highly analytical, has a strong data mindset, and excels at exploring complex, undocumented legacy databases—understanding data flow, dependencies, and gaps—and bringing clarity to enable successful modernization and migration initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

SQL Server Engineering

  • Design, develop, and maintain SQL Server databases with a focus on performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Develop and optimize T SQL objects (stored procedures, functions, views, indexes).
  • Lead database design standards across OLTP and reporting workloads.
  • Balance hands-on development and administration, ensuring operational stability and engineering excellence.

Hybrid Administration & Performance

  • Own SQL Server administration across on prem and cloud/hybrid environments.
  • Ensure high availability, backup/restore, disaster recovery, and security best practices.
  • Proactively identify and resolve performance issues using execution plans, Query Store, DMVs, and wait stats.
  • Establish capacity planning and performance baselines.

Automated Deployments & Database CI/CD

  • Implement database-as-code using SQL Server Database Projects (SSDT / .sqlproj).
  • Build and maintain automated database deployment pipelines across environments.
  • Manage schema versioning, environment consistency, and controlled releases.
  • Partner with DevOps teams to align database deployment with application CI/CD.

Legacy Data Exploration & Migration

  • Deeply analyze and profile legacy SQL Server and upstream data sources.
  • Understand and document data flows, dependencies, and lineage across systems.
  • Identify data quality issues, gaps, redundancies, and inconsistencies.
  • Design and execute data migration strategies, including validation and reconciliation.
  • Translate data findings into actionable insights for modernization and migration planning.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as the technical lead for database engineering initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers and enforce database best practices.
  • Collaborate with applications, analytics, and business teams to surface hidden data risks and opportunities.
  • Drive informed architectural decisions through data analysis.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Strong expertise in T SQL development and performance tuning.
  • Proven experience with SQL Server Database Projects and automated deployments.
  • Deep experience with legacy system analysis and data migrations.
  • Strong understanding of SQL Server internals and hybrid architectures.
  • Ability to independently explore complex data environments and bring clarity.
