Role Summary:
The Senior Steel Estimator autonomously leads the end-to-end budget creation and risk analysis for complex structural and multi-family steel projects. Operating with high autonomy, this role transforms complex architectural and structural drawings into finalized, client-ready proposals. The goal is to drive business growth by securing highly profitable mid-rise, high-rise, and commercial steel contracts through strategic pricing and value engineering.
Core Responsibilities:
- Lead Takeoffs: Execute comprehensive, high-precision quantity takeoffs for complex structural frames, light-gauge framing, and intricate multi-family miscellaneous metal packages.
- Strategic Pricing: Establish final labor, fabrication, and erection costing structures based on historical production data, market trends, and risk variables.
- Value Engineering: Analyze design documents to propose cost-saving structural alternatives that maintain code compliance while maximizing bid competitiveness.
- Bid Ownership: Manage the complete bid closing process, including drafting final scope qualifications, identifying exclusions, and presenting proposals directly to general contractors or developers.
- Mentor Team: Review the foundational work, data entries, and takeoffs of junior or intermediate estimating staff to ensure absolute accuracy before final submission.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum 8 years of dedicated structural steel and multi-family residential fabrication or construction estimating experience within the USA market.
- Software: Advanced proficiency in Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Excel, and specialized steel production/estimating platforms (e.g., Tekla PowerFab, FabSuite, SDS2, or OST).
- Industry Knowledge: Expert-level command of AISC codes, AWS welding standards, USA material shapes/weights, and complex multi-family architectural/structural integration.
- Skills: Elite risk-assessment capabilities, advanced contract negotiation skills, and exceptional executive-level communication for client-facing presentations.
